Why Are My Dashlights Flickering?

why are my dashlights flickering?

Beck & Masten Buick GMC North can help you learn why your dashlights are flickering.

If you notice your vehicle lights flickering while driving, it’s probably due to a battery that is failing. If the battery checks out fine, there are other trouble spots that may be responsible for the issue. No matter the cause, it is imperative that you have the problem fixed as quickly as possible. When your car lights aren’t working correctly, you may become a danger to other drivers.

The three areas dimming lights mostly happen are:

  • Lights on the Dash
  • Interior lights
  • Headlights

Because the battery is the easiest part to diagnose, this is where a mechanic will look first. If you think the battery is on its way out, bring it here so we can diagnose the problem and get the right OEM parts for your vehicle. While most cases result from a bad battery, there are other culprits to consider.

Headlight switch going bad

A failing light switch, either the headlight switch knob or an interior light dimmer, should be checked out when you have flickering car lights. In some rare situations, just replacing a worn switch may solve the problem, especially in older cars or vehicles with excessive mileage. If your car is newer, there’s a chance it could be symptoms of a more significant concern with the car’s electrical system.
Diagnosing these concerns can feel overwhelming, so if you are experiencing any issues with the lights flickering on your car, bring it in immediately. Our trained technicians will thoroughly diagnose the issue and provide you with options for fixing the flickering lights.

Alternator

Lights flickering on the dashboard may also be one of the signs your alternator is failing. Consider this, you use battery power to start your vehicle, but the alternator provides the power when your vehicle is running. If you have an older car with halogen headlights, you may see them get dimmer with a failing alternator. On newer cars equipped with HID or LED lighting, they may flicker on and off or stop functioning altogether.

Bad bulbs or fuses

Bad bulbs or fuses

If the battery is not the cause of your flickering car lights, it might be a bad bulb. Dead light bulbs are an easy fix and present an opportunity to upgrade to new energy-efficient LED bulbs.
If your vehicle has a blown fuse, you could be looking at a larger issue than you had originally anticipated. In most cases, a fuse dies when there is excess electricity flowing through it. For example, if the anti-lock brakes are installed with a 10amp fuse, and the fuse receives more than 10amps of electricity, the fuse would fail. In this example, your anti-lock brakes would fail due to the failed fuse. If you have a fuse that continues to fail, bring it in and we will accurately diagnose the larger, potentially more serious issue.
